Mission Statement
The mission of the University of Minnesota (UMN) Udall Center is to conduct clinical, multidisciplinary, translational and basic research that improves the understanding of and develops better treatments for patients with Parkinson's disease.
The overall goal of the UMN Udall Center is to define the changes in brain circuitry that underlie the motor dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease and use this information to develop novel deep brain stimulation therapeutic approaches. The UMN Udall Center will integrate neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and deep brain stimulation techniques to improve the lives of patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
As one of nine Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Disease Research Centers of Excellence designated in the United States by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), University of Minnesota researchers engaged in Parkinson's research are under one coordinated roof.The Udall Center program was developed in honor of former U.S. Congressman Morris K. Udall of Arizona, who fought a long battle with the disease. The Udall Centers use a multidisciplinary research approach to shed light on the fundamental causes of Parkinson’s disease (PD) as well as to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients with PD and related disorders.
